Larger lentil shaped beads are slightly over 5/8 inches from side to side. The type of glass-making used to create these beads is called furnace glasswork. There are many variations on the general principle, but furnace glass involves fusing different color glass together to create a multi-layer, multi-color effect.
The 8mm round beads are a type of mosaic glass bead. Beads are black on the outside and center. The transparent section between has a white lining on both sides.
These beads start as a glass rod with different colors of glass within the rod. The rod is cut into small pieces and ground to a round shape, revealing the internal pattern of colors. The design is similar to millifiore beads, but, instead of the pattern repeating, these beads are made with a single pattern. This technique is reminiscent of chevron glass beads.
