Why is it called picture jasper?
In this case, a picture does speak a thousand words. (Pun somewhat intended).

Jasper is the common name for a group of varied colored stones with similar properties.
More info on jasper here.

Picture jasper is so called, since, when cut into slabs, it can resemble brown landscapes. To achieve this effect, a special saw is used to slice off thin slabs of the rock opposing the internal banding. The slabs are then polished to enhance the detail.

Some examples show a suprisingly similarity to landscape paintings, complete with trees, rolling hills, and mountains in the background. The beige to brown banding can be seen in the bracelet above.
