What is 14k gold?
The metal clasps and metal beads on this website are made of either sterling silver or 14 karat gold.

Comparison of gold content in standard alloys

14k refers to the amount of pure gold content in the metal alloy. (See above pic.) Alloys are created by mixing two or more elements to make a metal that has more useful qualities than any single element used. In the case of 14 karat gold, 58% of the metal is pure gold. The remaining portion is either silver or another base metal, depending on the desired color of the final alloy.

Pure gold is too soft to be used in jewelry applications. The finish would scratch too easily, and the metal would wear away. By adding base metals to the gold, the final alloy is much more duarable and tough. 14 k retains the desirable qualities of pure gold, therefore the surface does not tarnish easily.

We choose an alloy that is the most similar in color to pure gold. The above garnet and gold bracelet has 14k yellow gold spacer beads and lobster style clasp.

Alloying gold is different than gold plated, or 'gold-fill'. These terms refer to the process of adding a layer of gold over a base metal product. Plating is applied extremely thin, filling is a bit thicker layer, but both products are susceptible to wearing. This leaves the customer with a base metal product. We do not use plated or goldfill metals.
