| Why does carnelian show banding and color variations? | |
Carnelian is composed of microscopic 'quartz' crystals. The reddish orange color comes from iron oxide. Carnelian is usually formed by successive layers of quartz crystals forming in a hollow areas surrounding or within rocks. Some of the layers of the stone are more dense than other layers. Little or no iron oxide is able to penetrate the rock in the more dense areas, this creates the white bands. Where the iron oxide is more readily absorbed by the rock, we see the deep orange to red colors. |
