Lapis, or lapis lazuli has one of the oldest histories of a mineral being used as a gemstone. Lapis is a stone consisting of primarily lazurite (the pretty blue stuff), with small amounts of calcite and pyrite. The finest lapis comes from Afghanistan, where mines have been producing quality gemstones for thousands of years. |
