About Earring Findings
There are too many types and variations of earring findings to go into complete detail about each type of finding. This brief description will, however, try to give the pros and cons of the most popular types used. There are many styles and variations of each type of finding.
hook style finding Hooks: Hooks are the most basic type of earring finding. Sterling silver hooks are made from hardened silver wire bent into a hook shape.
The advantages of hooks include being the most inexpensive of findings and usually the most durable.
The main disadvantage is that the earring can under some curcumstances come off when you do not want it to come off. There are two remedies for this. We supply rubber earring backs with all of our earrings, including the rainbow crystal pair above. The rubber backs hold the earrings snug on the ear.
Some people gentle pinch the earhook closed when wearing, which will also keep the earring from falling off.
post finding Posts: In some cases posts are the best choice. They usually come with silver ear nut backings which grip the post and keep the earring from slipping off. Most posts are petite and unobtrusive, which complements small beaded earrings.
Post are usually slightly more expensive than hooks.
The main disadvantage to posts is that they do not do well with larger drop style beaded earrings. Because of their design, they tend to 'sag' if used on larger or heavier earrings.
lever backs Lever backs: Lever backs have a mechanical action which snaps into place, closing the earring back while being worn.
Leverbacks are usually more expensive than posts and hooks.
Leverbacks tend to be made of thinner metal. This is usually acceptable with 14 and 18 ky gold, but is not the best choice for sterling silver findings. Sterling silver is a bit softer and the leverback can get bent out of shape. This can cause the finding to not work properly, since the two parts need to meet perfectly in order to close correctly.
