Shopping for jade can be confusing. Phrases like 'new jade' and 'china jade' make it difficult to determine exactly what you are purchasing. The term jade refers to two minerals, jadeite and nephrite. Of these two, nephrite is more common, and most often used in jewelry. Other minerals are sometimes sold as jade, prefixed with 'new', 'olive', 'Korean', etc. These are usually serpentine, a stone similar in color, but a little softer and less durable. |
