Jet black onyx is the first choice to blend with neutral colored crystals, or add sophistication to earthy gemstones.

Gemstone quality black onyx is relatively rare as a natural occurance. Since onyx is a form of the mineral chalcedony, there is a process to take ordinary, dull gray chalcedony and transform it into a beautiful jet color. This process resembles the natural process of coloration so closely that there is no chemical difference itn the final product.

Because of durability of the stone, it's ablity to take a high polish, and it's relatively cheap cost, it is a medium of choice for stone carvers. Intricate and beautiful carvings can be made from the rough material as seen by the brooch pictured on the left by master carver Steve Walters.
