Jade played an important role in historic China. The gemstone had many uses from the utilitarian, to ornate royal carvings. (The toughness of the stone makes it a perfect medium for intricate stone carving.) Many ancient carvings still exist today. The nephrite jade pendant pictured to the left is from the Warring States Period (c. 475 - 221 BCE). Jade is frequently referred to in ancient Chinese texts. The quote from the great Chinese poet Ch`u Yuan quoted at the top of the page is also from this period. |
