The gemstone garnet more than likely derives it's name from the Latin phrase granatum malum, which means pomegranate.

Most bead quality stones come from beach gravels. Because of being naturally tumbled, they are the same shape, size and color of pomegranate seeds. (The outside border of this page is unprocessed beach garnets.)

Many garnets are originally formed in mica schist. When found still within mica, the crystal formation resembles a volley ball.
