Sterling silver and 14 ky gold earrings featuring Baltic amber beads. Amber has been prized by many cultures throughout history. This gemstone was thought to be the tears of the Heliades (daughters of the sun) in ancient Greek mythology. It has also been used as medicine, both in the West and East. Amber will generate an electrical charge with friction, when rubbed against cloth, for instance. The ancient Persian word for amber literally means "that which attracts straw". The Greek word elektron was used to describe amber. The word elektron is the source of the modern english word electricity.
