About Dolphins
Dolphins are oceanic (
Delphinidae family), and river (
Platanistoidea family) dwelling mammals.
The word
dolphin comes from the Greek word
delphis, meaning "having a womb", or "fish with a womb".
Dolphins generally feed on fish and squid. There are about 40 species of dolphin.
A bottlenose dolphin, can grow to about 12 feet long. They are social animals living in groups, or
pods of up to 12 animals.
Bottlenose dolphins can jump more than 12 feet out of the water and dive to 1000 feet deep.
