About the Bali style beads:

This style of silverwork is done by hand, gradually adding more and more pieces of tiny silver until an intricate bead is created. The beads are then antiqued - a process in which they are completely tarnished, and the high areas are re-polished. This is similar to what happens naturally over time as the metal tarnishes, and the high areas are re-polished as you wear the item.

Many cultures, both present and past, use silver for it's own unique beauty, and not as a cheaper substitute for white gold.
