We choose only Afghanistan AA grade lapis with mostly lazurite, (deep blue color), and small amounts of calcite and pyrite, (white and brass colored specks). Lapis, with its deep blue hues, has been used throughout history. The gemstone can be ground to a powder and used as a pigment called ultramarine. This azure blue pigment adorns Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes, and was used as eyeliner for ladies in ancient Egypt. More about lapis here.
