How are these beads made?
The glass beads used in the last two anklets are referred to as mosaic beads. More specifically, the design is called millefiori. The word millefiori comes from the Italian words 'mille' and 'fiori', which mean 'thousand flowers'. Usually the design is a repeat of many flowers over the surface of the glass. The single flower types on this page are similar in design to chevrons, which have a single 'star' pattern.
There are several processes used in creating mosaic beads. All are variations of fusing differing colors of hot glass into a single tube of glass. The tube is then sliced into smaller sections to reveal the intricate 'floral', or 'candy' patterns of color.
